I heard the main thing is to suffercate them, that's why you slather on stuff to the hair, so they can't breath and die. I also heard you can even just put a plastic bag on their head and seal it will around with first aid tape and they will eventually die because no air, and plus it's not messy.

Check out these websites. The last one talks about the blowdrying method. Scroll through the entire article to see how you can use a blowdryer (you have to do it carefully and thoroughly on LOW heat--don't burn your child's scalp.) to get rid of 98% of nits/eggs.
Note that a lot of the different methods may work, but can counteract each ...
