Actually, I stopped by to start my own thread, not expecting to find any lottery related bits, but under the circumstances I'll just append my concern to this section.
I recently received the Sick Kids Lottery pamphlet in the mail. I looked it over and to my grave surprise found NO statement indicating that the proceeds (complete or partial) will be used to support Sick Kids Hospital. I called the number provided to ask what percentage of the proceeds will be directed to help with research/facilities/equipment/etc. Although the call center representative sounded very sincere, the final answer was that the lottery will "benefit" the kids (I provided my contact info and was promised a more detailed reply, which I hope will come and disprove my suspicions). "Benefit" is a very generic term and as far as I can tell may simply reflect on the fact that the pamphlet itself is a form of advertising for Sick Kids, which helps to spread the word in the community and prompt people to contribute through charitable donations (this option is present on the attached mail "ticket order form").
Perhaps I'm being naive, but it is my belief that the vast majority of people participating in this lottery are under the impression that money they spend on tickets will in some way help out the kids and their families, whether by improving the quality of care, furthering medical advancements in disease research, or providing some other direct, tangible means of support. Notably, since no such solid claim is made by the lottery, the organizers can't be blamed for the public's misinterpretation of the facts.
Does anyone else out there find this misleading, or am I the only victim here? Any comments correcting my assumptions are also welcome.
