    ANOTHER QUESTION FOR RAMSIN!

First of all let me say that I have enjoyed watching your segments over the years and am pleased to see you continue even after Marilyn's departure.  Thank you for taking the time to read the message boards.  I know that there has been a demo on painting decks a few times but my brain has deleted this info and I can't remember what I am supposed to do.  I painted my deck (Benjamin Moore solid deck stain) last summer and it has peeled up (a real mess)  yes...the deck was dry when it was done.  What do I do now?  Sand it down? Prime it? Then repaint?  I'm at a loss...HELP????  Thank You! Thank You!  My husband keeps saying " I told you we should'nt have painted the deck!!!" Save me Ramsin..........:)

    Re: ANOTHER QUESTION FOR RAMSIN!

Maybe they could give Ramsin a special place to answer questions on the message board 'coz I have a question as well!

A few months back you showed how to parge the foundation. I think you used a special product and I can't remember the of it or when in the process it was used?

Can you just outline the steps again?

    Thanks so much.

    Re: ANOTHER QUESTION FOR RAMSIN!

OK, for the parging lesson go the the following post - http://forums.citytv.com/forums/thread/357464.aspx

As for the Deck painting, it could have failed for several reasons. You will now have to scrape and sand the existing finish until you have removed most of the paint. If you can get it to the bare wood again, that would be best. There are people that will come and prepare the deck surface for you if you don't want to tackle this part of it. Once you have a good clean surface to work with, try using a solid covering stain product that will penetrate into the wood surface. You need to ensure that you have a dry surface to work with. Then, you need to make sure you don't do this in the middle of a hot sunny day. Morning or early afternoon is best so that you don't have direct hot sunlight on the surface. Make sure there isn't rain in the forecast. Now if you're lucky enough to meet all of these requirements, you can start staining. You can use a roller to apply the stain if you wish, however, you will want to go over it with a brush to ensure that it is driven into the grain of the wood and not jsut sitting on top. You may have to put a second application. If you can meet all of these criteria, there is no reason why the finish shouldn't late you for at least two seasons.

I hope that helps - probably not what you wanted to hear though!

    Good Luck!

    Ramsin

Thanks so much for the information Ramsin.  Looks like a lot of elbow grease and a positive attitude about the chore ahead is called for here.!!!

    Re: ANOTHER QUESTION FOR RAMSIN!

    Hi Ramsin...

I did see the reply to the other "patching" concrete question, but that question was on the inside. Mine is the whole foundation area on the outside. Our house is higher than the rest in the area and so the black tar or whatever it is,shows a bit  in some areas.

Should we use the Concrete bond  to those areas straight on, or mixed with Sacrete sand mix?

Do we still dampen the foundation first for both scenarios?

How many inches below the ground do we need to go?

    Thanks

    Re: ANOTHER QUESTION FOR RAMSIN!

The process is the same for the outside. Use concrete bond on the bare foundation before applying parge but don't let it dry before you apply the parge. Using bond as a mixing liquid for the parge will improve strength. Do not parge below grade as it will not last. Stay four to five inches above the grade.

    Hi Ramsin...

    Re: ANOTHER QUESTION FOR RAMSIN!

I'd say no more than 3/8"

That will depend on how uneven the base is and how smooth you'd like to make it. Try not to go too  thick with the parging.

    Re: ANOTHER QUESTION FOR RAMSIN!

Hi Ramsin:  Just a quick question with a topic that was discussed a couple of weeks ago.  You were talking about these smart tiles that you can buy at Home Depot.  My husband and I went there to check them out and the guy said he had never heard of them nor did they have them.  Maybe I miss understood you and you talked about another store that had them.  If you could please clarrify that would be great.  P.S. I really enjoy you when you are on the show.  And I love those shirts you wear.  Keep them coming!!  Any chance you can build me a new house?  Ha, ha!!

    Re: ANOTHER QUESTION FOR RAMSIN!

Not sure which tiles you mean. I would need more information.

More detail!   Which show?   Who was on?   What else did I show?  .......etc.

    Re: ANOTHER QUESTION FOR RAMSIN!

Hi Ramsin:  I can't remember what else was on the show  but the SMART TILES were these  peel and stick things that I think were heat resistant and easy to apply.  I think that you could cut them to the size that you need as well.  I think this show was on in the springtime sometime.  We only have a small area and backsplash that we need to do something about and it sounded like this would be the perfect alternative.  Thank you,

    Re: ANOTHER QUESTION FOR RAMSIN!

I saw today's repeat episode that had Marilyn hosting and they spoke of these smart tiles.

(only available in June) since it was an old show & the guest host presented samples of this peel & stick tiles that looked like glass mosiac or mini subway tiles. Did not catch where there were available.  But I heard that you can easily apply them as a kitchen back splash and they can be easily removed with a hair dryer.

Not suitable for flooring or shower stalls.

    Very interesting new product.
