I have had Highlights and low lights in the past. They last as long as it takes for you to grow them out, or re dye them!  I like the look of them as long as they don't look like stripes of colour in your hair...Go for it Annie !

    Re: hair highlights

Been a hairstylist for 28 years.........your hair grow on average 1/2 " a month.  If you get highlights, keep in mind that you will start seing some regrowth every month.  Depending on how long your hair is, if it's layered (more or less, if you have a style when you have a part and see the scalp, you will noticed the regrowth.

At first, your highlights are going to show a lot more.  Because it will be new to you and because hair products usually darkened the highlights (build up), if you use a hairspray, first spray it on a kleenex, if it's light brown then you know that colour will deposit in your highlights (hair is more porous when highlighted).

Keep in mind your hair will lightened up over the summer.  Depending on your hairstyle and length, you will need to get them freshnened up between 2 1/2 to 4 months.  If you've never had highlights before and afraid of getting it done.  Ask your hairstylist to give you highlights that are suttled.

Depending on your haircolour, age and hairstyle and what you want to achieve, there are many options.

    Re: hair highlights

    Thanks for the information,

Would you mind sending me some more advice

    1. My hair is quite short and it is naturally curly

    2. I have had my hair both coloured and dyed before to cover the grey

    3. While I was a natural blonde growing up it changed overnight to a dark brown colour

    Re: hair highlights

I understand you had your haircoloured in the past but do you have your haircoloured now?  If you do you have your hair coloured, will always have to get a hair colour touch up every 6 weeks have touch up your highlights also, otherwise, you will have one uniform colour at the scalp when you want to touch up your colour to cover the grey,  then touch up your highlights at the same time.

The whole process is very costly if money is in issue.  It's the maintenance of having it done on a regular basis.  What is the reason why you want to have highlights?  Is it because you want to camouflage the grey?  Or is is because you have lost your blonde and would like to get a little of it back?

If you don't have any colour, depending on how much grey you have and the colour of your own hair, they might be able to just give you some highlights,,,they could also give you some lowlights (if you have too much white hair  which is the same colour of your natural hair), and give you some highlights to give it some brightness.

    Re: hair highlights

    Wow!!!!

You have sure given my alot to think of. As my hair appointment isn't for 6 weeks -cut and perhaps highlights I will be able to make a better decision as to what I want to do.

As it is just a first time and perhaps something I don't want for the rest of my life I m glad to know that it wil come out.

I will let you know what and if I get it down

    Re: hair highlights

If you don't like it, can put a colour over it but it will show some highlights but not as noticeable as everytime you wash it and also when you spend time in the sun

    Re: hair highlights

Now it certainly sounds like a risk I'm willing to take. I willl just get highlighs that aren't real noticable.

I was at the salon the other week and the one woman ( probably in her mid-late 60's) got pink highlights in her hair and that is what she wanted

    Gisele

As you are an experienced hair dresser I have one more question to ask you.

What is the difference between getting your hair coloured as oppossed to getting strikes?

Which one is more harmful on your hair etc.

Thanks for getting back to me and I hope not to bother you anymore

    Re: hair highlights

It all depends on the natural or dyed colour of your hair and if the highlites are done with peroxide or hair coloring treatment, the darker your base hair color and the lighter the highlites the more often you have to have it touched up, plus rate of hair growth and outside elements(swimming and sun exposure and so on).
