    Replanting/Moving Peony?

Last year I moved into my new townhouse which has a beautiful big peony plant in the front. The problem is I am never outside in the front other than to go to the garage and would like to move it to my backyard. (the peony, not the garage:)

Is moving a peony plant a safe thing to do? If so can I do it now or do I need to wait for a better time of year?

Thank you in advance for any help.

I was told that the best month to move Peonies is October (cooler and more success).   If you can't wait ~ I would at least wait until it finishes blooming in a month or so.   Be sure that you don't plant it too deep or you won't get blooms for a long time ~ my grandfather did this!  You have to have ants to get your peonies to bloom also as the ants eat the sweet liquid that glues the buds closed.  Hope that helps a little.

I have never quite figured how to get rid of all the ants when you cut some flowers to bring inside as an arrangement.

To get rid of the ants, just lightly hose them off before cutting.

Actually, the ants aren't required for the peonies to bloom.  They're just attracted by the nector (or so says a professional gardener friend of mine).  I usually deal with the ants by cutting the buds/bouquets when they are just about to open, put them into a vase with water and then leave them outside for the night.  When I bring them in the next morning, the bugs all seem to be gone.

I've always heard that transplanting peonies should be done in the fall.  I would think that it could be done at other times, but you may find that the plant produces fewer blooms for the next year or so as a result.  Heck, I just planted two peony plants that I bought from a nursery two weeks ago. That's not a whole lot different than transplanting.  I planted another one last year about this time, and it's already producing blooms this year.
