Best makeup for acne prone/combination skin?

I'm 37 years old and suffer from combination skin with (seems like) constant breakouts around my mouth and chin.  Currently, I use MAC makeup but was wondering if there might be something better...that won't contribute to future breakouts and maybe even help clear up my skin.  Any suggestions??

Make sure you always wear an oil free moisturizer under your foundation and always remove your makeup completely before doing any work out or before bed.

Also, do you use cream or powder foundation? Cream will probably be oilier and more greasy complared to a powder with concealer underneath. If all else fails, go back to the MAC counter and ask one of the artists - they are pros and will be able to recommend one of their products which will minimize breakouts.

For many years now I've been using Serious Skin from the Shopping Channel (the company is based in the U.S.) or you can buy their products directly from them or even on Ebay.  I use their glycolic cleanser, A Force serum and moisturizer.  The cleanser washes off your makeup as well and then apply the A Force serum and then moisturizer.  They have many different products though, but I've been using these for years and they have really helped.  Keeps the breakouts under control too.  I think yes the makeup can irritate your skin but what skin care products you're using is important.

    Jerh,

Your adult acne breakouts maybe due to your makeup brushes. Do you wash them on a regular base?

In general, women have problems with acne because no matter what you use at the end of the day you are covering your pores with this foreign substance.

Zeno (sold at Shoppers Drug Mart) is a good product to help control pimples + you can use it over your makeup.

Try that and see if it works.

    Hi Jerh,

Since the break outs are contstant and are located around the mouth and chin may be "hormonal"  it would not hurt to go to the doctor for a check-up. As for the tip regarding cleaning your make-up brushes, I do agree but if that was the main issue you would of broken out in other areas on your face as well.

For make-up your best bet would be anything oil-free/water-based. If you do not require full coverage try M.A.C. Studio Mist Foundation it both lightweight and seems to be water based. Great for all skin types. However, make sure that you fully cleanse your skin twice daily and when possible do not wear any make-up.

    Good Luck.

Really it doesn't matter what make-up you use if the skin underneath is not healthy. I've had adult acne my whole life (I'm now 49.) I used a prescription topical lotion to control it for many, many years, but it didn't work that well after a while. I finally tired the Proactive system last year, and my skin has never looked better. I wish I had tried it much sooner. I don't even use the Rx anymore. They also have make-up now, although I haven't tried it. My skin looks great, and I use a light liquid foundation now, water-based, of course.
I would really urge you to try Proactive (www.proactive.com) They ship to Canada, although sometimes you can find a kiosk in a mall which carries it. You can get your money back if you don't like the products.

    Good luck!

I like the serious skin care line of acne treatments. They work wonders when you have a breakout and Gisele is correct, you need to wash your brushes. You might also want to make sure you are not putting anything with oils on your skin at bedtime. Look for products that have been developed in a way that will not plug your pores.

And one more thing that people don't usually remember is that you should have those little scoopy things that you can use to dig out a little of your moisturizer from the pot of it. By sticking yoru fingers in there every day you could be transferring bacteria that can grow and cause acne.

    Hope that helps!

Here's another tip: consider a fondation primer...this will create a barrier between your skin and the foundation.

We are the same age with the same problem, I have also started getting some wrinkles.  I didn't moitsurize the forehead or chin area before but have started using the Oil of Olay anti-aging anti-blemish daily moisturizer and it is fantastic.  I use Oil of Olay 7x on the rest of my face.  Now my breakouts are much improved, the wrinkles are gone and my skin is healthier looking.  As for makeup, Clinique has a wonderful coverup for blemishes called Acne Solutions which covers and treats.  Then I use Clinique's Clarifying Powder makeup which covers well but is light and reduces shine.  It goes on with a round sponge which is washable and is kept in the air-holed compact.  Good luck, it can be discouraging but it also keeps you looking young (that's what I tell myself).
