    baby present gifts

My daughter is going to be  one in September and unfortunately I'm not sure what t do in regards of gifts. She has enough clothes and toys expecially now that I'm going to go back to work. Is there a proper way to ask the guests to bring money for a r.r.s.p. for my daughter or even gifts to be donated instead of clothes and toys to local charities

Are you planning a birthday party ?   Are you sending out written invites ?  Is it just close family and or friends ?

O.K. in regards to the birthdays

    1. My parents will be coming Saturday morning
    2. His parents will be coming Saturday afternoon
    3. Sundy ( the day of my child's bithday) we will be celebrating it by ourselves
    4. Next Saturday morning will be going to my grand parents
    5. Next Saturday afernoon we will be  spending time at his grand parents ( neither family has a great grand child
    6. I also know some of my friends will be popping in.

Should I tell my relatives that I would prefer they would start a bank fund in my daughters name

I think such 'close' & immediate family members you can discuss this issue freely.

The reason why I was asking those questions, is that I would not put a monetary request on a written invite, especially to friends or distant relatives.  Grandparents and family members do take pleasure in spoiling the little bundles of joy & the last thing you want to create are sore or hard feelings amongst the clan.

You can always at a later date, gather up the toys and or clothes and donate to good will when outgrown. Very kind of you to think of the unfortunate.  Congrats on your new addition to the family AA !!!

& have fun and lots of pleasure celebrating your child's birthday !

    Re: baby present gifts

I think with your parents and in-laws you should be able to discuss the issue of gifts openly. If you have started an RESP, then perhaps they would like to contribute. We have RESPs set up and often get cheques for that purpose. Of course grandparents also like to get frivolous gifts too and that's their perogative!

I did see an article in one of the parenting magazines about charity donations, organizations that do it. I don't remember the details, but I seem to think there was one such thing that coordinates the invites and asks for something like $10 per child that goes toward a charity but also provides the birthday child with some money for the parent to buy one collective gift. I thought that was kind of cool.

We also give some ideas on what our kids are interested in to our family and close friends around birthday time. For instance, interested in puzzles and card games, etc.

    Re: baby present gifts

Another thought: this year our daughter turned 5 and we suggested to one set of uncle/aunt who we knew did not have a lot of cash, that they did not need to buy her anything material. That she just wanted to spend time with them. The uncle gave her a certificate to go skating with him, the aunt gave a certificate to go to the movies with her. This worked out extremely well! Our daughter was really excited to do both, and we got a free afternoon out of each gift!

For a one year old, you could suggest one grandparent enlist in "parent and tot" swimming lessons with the child for instance. Or sportsball (they start at 16 months I believe). Or ask for coupons for babysitting?

Great idea with the coupon book . You know your little one can enjoy them all year instead of being overwelmed with all sorts of  stuff on one day

f.y.i. I meant to say my best friend's daughter was having a birthday and was wondering if  could come out with different suggestions for birthday gifts .

She thought it would be easier if I asked everyone else instead of her

    Re: baby present gifts

There is no Baby to buy gifts for.  In the Health and Relationship forum Anne say's she is divorcing and has no children or pets to worry about.

Ironically I have a bunch of my friends who are going through one of  these problems and I thought perhaps this would be a good place to  get suggestions but maybe I was wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Re: baby present gifts

As I have already posted/addressed this in another thread, you could have avoided all this mess just by stating that you were asking opinions/seeking help for a friend. Simple. Nothing wrong in doing so.  Why lead us all down the wrong path ?  It sure does make us question your motives and now you have lost the confidence of others who now will always question is it true ?  OR NOT ?
