    Mouth Cankers

    Good Morning everyone

I have a close relative who is suffering from canker sores in her mouth and I need to find a solution to ease her pain. These are not just one here & there. There are always several small but very sore ones white in colour which at times leak a thick, sticky and unappetizing liquid. She has been told its Lichen but the treatment has not worked and wondered if anyone had similar experience or if someone with knowledge might be kind enough to help. Thanks in advance.

Canker sores are often caused by acidic foods such as tomatoes - eliminate anything acidic and stick to neutral foods to see if this makes a difference. I always think of the BRAT diet - bananas, rice, apples and tea. Chicken & other white meat are neutral too.

Can also rinse mouth after any food/drink to keep as clean as possible.

My father gets severe cankers, and has tried everything over the years, but nothing has worked to stop them.  I believe it is stress and nerves that cause the cankers, at least in his case.

    Good luck finding a solution.

This is going to sound bizarre but I had alot of canker sores as a child and my mother always used ALUM POWDER. It is, beleive it or not a meat tenderizer. Wet your finger...dip it into the alum powder...then touch it to the canker sore....and presto....it will be gone. This really works and it releived the pain that went along with it. It tastes pretty aweful but hey!

Am wondering if it's a yeast infection. Usually caused by taking too much antibiotics....It's usually white around the tongue mouth, bad odour and wondering if it got bad enough to cause open sores.

We were always given alum to put on our cankers also as kids.  Hurt like H#%L but worked!

    Re: Mouth Cankers

I was told by my MD that canker sores may be a result of not enough vitamin C in your diet.   Start taking a vit C tablet or better yet eat an orange every day to see if this helps you.  As well stay away from black tea, not ripe enough bananas and  fresh pineapple.  Since I have eliminated these from my diet I haven't had a canker sore in years.  Oh yeah, I also noticed that if I ate a hard candy such as a jolly rancher or something similar to it I always ended up getting a sore on my tongue. As well the earlier comment sounds like it is thrush and you would need to see your physician for any treatment. I hope this helps.

With all of the different advice, I was just thinking it might be something to ask your GP or naturopath about to see what particularly applies to you.

My Mom had the same problems yrs ago it was due to low B12. Once she started getting shots they cleared up and has never had them since.

      Request bloodwork.

I too have suffered from canker sores and what works for me is a therapeutic oral rinse called  Steri/sol. It is red in color and usually is sold in the mouthwash department. Here in the Maritimes it can be found at Real Atlantic Superstores (Loblaws) and I may have seen it at Wal-Mart. It is recommended for relief of irritated gums, canker sores and sore throats. Good luck with it.

Sounds more like Thrush than canker sores. See if her Dr. will prescribe a tablet form antifungal treatment.

Thrush is the oral version of a yeast infection. Yeast can effect your body in different areas: under the nails as a fungal infection; on the foot as Athletes Foot; as vaginal yeast infections and in the mouth as Thrush.

To determine if it is Oral Lichen Planus, she could have a bi-opsy by a dental pathologist. In Toronto this can be arranged at Sunnybrook Hospital Dental Dept, and is covered by OHIP.

My teengae daughter had this problem last year.  She had about 10-12 cankers in on her gums and her tongue.  I don't know if your relative has that many.  Aft first my daughter's doctor couldn't figure out what was causing them and then concluded that it was a form of hand, foot and mouth disease.  She prescribed her medication that is similar to what you take when you have shingles (I think it was called something like Famiver)  It cleared it up within a few days.

    Re: Mouth Cankers

Hi, my son also suffers from painful mouth cankers, he's had them for years.  He has had blood work done, but nothing showed up that was unusual.  The cankers are flaring up again, he gets so many of them, he has a hard time eating.  His cankers just don't cover his mouth, but on his throat too and his face looks swollen.  We tried all those mouth washes, baking soda, salt etc. they temporaily ease the pain, but not for long.  They seem to last for a long time, poor guy.   Going to try a allergist, and see if they can find anything.  Hope to get him some help soon.

    Thanks

    Re: Mouth Cankers

as a long time sufferer of canker sores- i have always had great success with equal parts of warm water and peroxide- just before bed- i swish it around the inside of my mouth a couple of times-usually the next day they are gone- my dentist says this is also good for maintaining excellent oral and gumm care!

    good luck-there are painfull
